Let’s just chat for a second before we get into today’s comic, the heaviest one in the whole thing. After this we only have a few more days of postings left.

Anyroad, there’s a chance that BIG HERO 6 is still playing in a theater near you.

Go goddamned see it.

Seriously, the movie is ridiculously good, and the trailer doesn’t in any way express its complexities.

If you don’t like it, I’ll…dunno, maybe I’ll do something for you. And then I’ll tick the box next to your name that says “COLD AND EMOTIONLESS.”

In related news, my latest bad movie watching was Gor. Oddly, I could only find a Spanish-language trailer for it.

If you’re not familiar with the world of Gor…well, it’s not entirely pleasant. I’d say more on it, but I’ve refused to ever read any book in the series.

The movie managed to be both offensive and inoffensive. It’s was mostly a standard 80’s sword-and-sorcery film, but with a lot more women tied up and treated like objects than one would expect. And hair. My god, Gor invented hairspray but not hairstyling.

RIGHT! On to the most troubling bit of The Wizard’s Lesson. After this, it’s only a tiny bit more to wrap things up, then on to our discussion about the lesson.

As always, click the pic to embiggen.

First, the last installment I posted:

Wizard's Lesson birth
And now…

Wizard's Lesson brains dashed out
Wizard's Lesson he is back
So that happened.

Love,

benjamin

I’ll be shifting hosts in a few days, so benchilada.net may be down for a little bit.

While I have no doubt that you’ll survive, I do want you to know that if you need anything while I’m gone, there are other resources that can help.

Can I just say how much I love the barter culture? I recently put up a request for a bowling-ball on the local Craigslist–Nadja’s making a gazing-ball for the back yard–and was happy to hear that a person was willing to go swapsies for it.

As such, I paid this:

Daredevil Man Without Fear and All Star Superman - I'm bartering these for a bowling ball

For this:

Brunswick Bowling Ball for Barter

It’s a great world.

Speaking of great things, here’s a movie you’ll either love or hate, depending on how awesome you are. It is NOT what you think you’re expecting; instead, it’s freaky and terrifying. Watching it with particular intoxicants may result in your experience being more visceral.

I think that’s it for now.

Love,

benjamin

Ladies and gentlemen, the gravy thickens with pages 2 and 3 of The Wizard’s Lesson.

I’m rather proud of myself for sticking to new art posted at least once a week.

I’ve had a song stuck in my head for a long damn time now, but it’s going to pay off in new art that I really like so far. I can’t tell you what it is because I’m a bitch of a tease.

Unrelated: this movie may be showing in the background of our next party. [Well, that and KITTENS.] The lack of plot is more than made up for by some solid fights. Drop the volume to can-only-hear-fist-impacts level and let the lengthy battles roll.

I love that the first fight is barely a few minutes in and is over five minutes of fighting…over whether or not to keep mining.

That’s all for now.

Love,

benjamin

Last night's movie at Stone-Robot Enterprises was for nostalgia. It's dated in a way that makes you alternate between wry smiles and painful cringe, but the rewatch was actually kinda fun.

Oddly, the worst part was that Edwards's character being dumber than a sack of used condoms actually made the bumbling aspect LESS believable.

Also bad: that we only see Fiorentino's breasts for about one second in a less-than-cool situation. If you're gonna film five sex scenes then you gotta throw us some candy.

What's the last movie you watched?

As for me loving Jedi the most, don't give none, don't get none. Respect to all three.

When this comes out on DVD, I may need to have a Cool Gel Attacks viewing party.

I'm behind on some of my old LJ features, so I'm gonna do some catch-up this weekend, get a few days ahead. Also gotta do some stuff with my actual fucking website.

Also...I was at Wal-Mart--SHUT UP I HAD NO CHOICE--and saw this DVD collection for five bucks.

How could I not?

And how could I not be so fucking stupid as to try to watch one a night for the next twelve nights?

Somebody kill me between these fucking things do.

I haven't even heard of nine of them.

Gonna start tonight.

Oh god.

How many of these movies can you guess? As usual, some are kinda obscure, or are less well-known scenes.

I was totally going to do another one of these, but I totally cocked it up on my second drawing of the page by doing a total spoiler for the whole movie.

Totally.

Re-enjoy this one instead:

See you around,

I saw this a long time ago, on real / reel film loaned by China to my cinema teacher.

Same with this one:

Too bad neither one seems to be available with English subtitles. :(

Why I should not be allowed to make drawings of words on the board while playing Scrabble:

My MUXTAPE. Nobody has yet named the theme.

And now, an image-heavy look at the media I've been checking out recently, whether for the first time or the seventh... )
Recently Watched:

12 Angry Men -- Holy shitass, how did I go 31 years without watching this film? Sidney Lumet directs Henry Fonda and Jack Klugman and Ed Begley, Sr., and Jack Warden and everybody else, who kick ass in this closed-room drama about the one man who refuses to find a boy guilty of murder. Watch this movie. Hard. Curious that I inadvertently chose Lumet's directing debut just a week or two after watching Fail-Safe.

I Still Worship Zeus -- Interesting, if occasionally slow, documentary about people who still worship the 12 God Pantheon in Greece. The sound was odd and spotty, and some of the scenes could have been cut a bit, I think, for a bit more in-depth stuff, but hey, ultimately informative and thought-provoking.

Pixote: Law of the Weakest -- Wow. Damn. I...yeah. Filmed in Brazil in 1982, and based on a book, this feels-like-a-documentary-movie about orphans and criminal youth in Brazil is mind-blowing. The director chose real street kids to play the street kids, who are taken to a juvenile detention center after being rounded up for a crime they didn't do. The brutality of the center and the horrors after their escape...my god. Another one you'd better see. Just...be emotionally prepared.

Recently Read:

I Love Led Zeppelin by Ellen Forney -- Delightful vignette comics, often only one page long, about her own life and the lives of others. Fascinating and lovely and...lovely. Give it a read. I'm going to order a copy later this week.

Tong war! The First Complete History of the Tongs in America by Eng Ying Gong -- Only got partway through this before becoming a bit bored. While parts of it were fascinating, parts of it were likely only interesting / scandalous when it was published back in 1930. Should have skipped forward more than I did, perhaps.
Wait, I...

What?

Why do I love this so?

Via [profile] piss_and_ink over in [profile] holymilkshakes, a number of HILARIOUS recuts of the final scene of There Will Be Blood.

IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS MOVIE, DO NOT FUCKING CLICK ON THE CUT.

This is the FINAL SCENE.

More fun on Monday!

Going to go see CLOVERFIELD tonight.

8pm at the Savoy 16.

Feel free to swing by and join me. I'm easy to pick out in a crowd.

Don't tell me not to watch it because you hated it; I'm still going to watch it.
Indeed, don't tell me "It's great until the ending!" or anything like that.
If you know me, you know that I barely even read the backs of DVD covers anymore.

I want nearly everything in my life to be a surprise.

ALSO: Somebody who knows German **koff[profile] yowzerkoff** help me translate this page so I know exactly how to order a few HAMBURGERS IN CANS. I will eat them for all of you. Thanks to [personal profile] elusis for pointing me towards these magnificent creatures.
